Create NPCs outside the campaign to add them later.

A visibility filter for everything in a campaign would be really nice to have.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're asking for, but you can already join existing campaigns, using the link on the campaign page. Obviously the character you're trying to join with can't already be in another campaign.

You can also create "unassigned" characters within a campaign that aren't active in the campaign until someone claims them. As DM you can claim them too.

What he's saying is if he wants to introduce an NPC mid session, he has to create it then and there. If he does it before, the players can see them, which is spoiler-y. In his case, he plans them out for a while. Which, again, you can't do with any characters you make inside a campaign, because spoilers.

Well, aside from the fact that most DMs wouldn't want PCs delving into the character sheet of an NPC even after it has been introduced... why can't you just make the character outside of the campaign, then join the campaign with that character at the right moment?

I thought joining invited an account in, and they could choose to make a character or pick an unpicked character from the campaign roster. Do I have that down wrong? I'm pretty sure you can't bring characters in from the outside once your account is in the campaign, that functionality is what OP's asking for.

I have a DM account and multiple characters I own that are in the same campaign. Can add more or remove them as needed. I think the functionality OP is asking for already exists.

No it doesn't. You can only create unassigned characters, you can't add outside characters in. Moreover, you cannot hide characters either. Sure, anyone who doesn't own a character won't be able to see the Description or Notes section, but everything else, including the name and stats, is completely open.

I just checked. There's a workaround, but it doesn't exist straight up.

Incorrect. I just tried making a character in My Characters, not attached to any campaign. Then I jumped over to a campaign page and went to the Invite Link for that campaign and was able to join with that character that previously did appear on the campaign page. Can also confirm there were two of my characters in that campaign already.

The only time players would be able to see those characters in advance is if they're all sharing the same login (which is pointless).

    That's why I said there's a workaround...

    It works as intended.

What is really needed is a way for DMs to track NPCs, not add NPCs as "hidden" players. And I'm sure that functionality will eventually show up where it is supposed to, for use as part of the Encounter Builder when that's released. That way players can know all they need to know about NPCs and DMs can keep the details to themselves.

Why should players know what an NPC has in its backpack? Or even what level it is? However, if that's how you want to play, letting PCs see an NPC's character sheet, fine... the system already allows for that AND you can build it out of sight and join later.

Also not certain I understand the issue. As a DM, I can create multiple NPCs, add them at any time to a given campaign by using the campaign invite link in a browser, activate or deactivate the NPC once its in the campaign. Put the NPC's preference setting to "private" rather than "public" so the players don't have access to its details.

The only things missing really are

    1) an option to add a character/NPC directly to a campaign on the "My character's page" without using the campaign invite link in a browser, especially if you're the campaign manager/DM.

    2) make "private" NPCs visible to the DM when cycling through the characters directly from the character sheets (by clicking the campaign name on the main character page) -- so if you're browsing a PC and you want to look at a NPC's sheet, you don't have to leave the character sheets, back to to Creations > My Campaign > select campaign > Select NPC all over again.

Copying the invite link into your browser and then following is definitely a workaround, and not an actual feature. There is no indication that using that link would accomplish this.

However, this workaround also ignores the issue of content sharing. In order to utilize content sharing I must create the NPC as an unassigned character, not outside the campaign.
