Is it difficult to train them, destroy their meme knowledge, teach them how to actually play, etc? I ask this as a rogue who wants to teach new players the art of roguing.

I’ve found that new players who are wanting to play, are very receptive to learning the game. I would say, it all depends on the mentality of the ‘long time players.’ I first played D&D in 1979, I dm for my friends with whom I’ve played for 20+ years. My 21 yo daughter is in that game. I also dm a game for my 16 yo and her friends, both of my daughters are in that game (all new players). I love both games as each have different approaches to the game. When certain strategies fail, a gentle nudge in the right direction, or illumination of character possibilities tends to do the trick. Young game nerds are still game nerds just less experienced, grace goes a long way. :)
